Phonics
Teachers at Kirklington Primary School follow the Letters & Sounds scheme of work for the teaching of Phonics. This is supplemented with aspects of Jolly Phonics and interactive games from www.phonicsplay.co.uk.
Reading
In the EYFS and infant class, reading books are grouped into Book Bands from a range of schemes such as: Oxford Reading Tree, Read Write Inc, Phonics, Rigby Star, Collins Big Cat, Treetops, Project X, Floppy’s Phonics and Nelson Flying Boot. All bands contain a variety of fiction and non-fiction books and children are encouraged to select their own books from an early age. We encourage a breadth and depth of reading and understanding at each level, as well as reading for enjoyment.
By the time children reach the junior classes, the great majority of pupils are reading independently and have free choice from the class library. The range of reading material is also supplemented by a visit from the library van three times per year.
